11 Sinowa

Sinowa jogged up the path toward the meadow, which was very familiar now, requiring little attention. He did not expect any manner of attack, not now, not yet. He did not intend to permit himself to be careless, but attack now seemed unlikely. Though he knew exactly how long the path ran from the Convocation grounds to the meadow, at this moment, this small distance seemed endless. His impatience grew with every step.

All that time wasted going down and now coming up again, and all the time Baroko inTasaka and those people were walking higher and higher into the mountains. They would probably find the source of the evil that had come here, and he would not be there. If some ordinary danger came upon them, other warriors would have to handle that danger. If some extraordinary peril came upon them, those young singers would have to deal with that peril. No doubt it was arrogance to think that in either case, they might not handle any kind of difficulty as well because he was not there to face it himself. But Sinowa did think that might be so, that this was even likely. No doubt Baroko inTasaka was a skilled warrior and well capable of taking the warleader’s role; Sinowa did not even doubt this. But he was more than irritated to be so far below and behind those people; he was afraid for them, and furious.

Shameful, to think that some of his anger also came from the knowledge that Baroko would come to the source of this ill luck long before Sinowa himself came there, and therefore Baroko would be the man to claim the honor of that contest. If not him, some other among his people. Eku inTasaka, perhaps. That was not even unlikely. It would be far more shameful to permit himself to hope the inTasaka warrior would fail. Sinowa certainly would not allow that thought for more than the instant necessary to set it very firmly aside. But he also took a faster pace.

Hasiro jogged beside him, keeping to his pace. A young man of nineteen winters could run faster than a man Sinowa’s age, and for longer. Hasiro showed absolutely no inclination to take a faster pace now; nor to lag; nor to argue. He matched Sinowa’s pace and kept his gaze directed forward and outward, exactly as he should.

Sinowa said, “Attack may come here along this part of the path, but I think that is not likely. Be watchful, but tell me how the path lies once we cross the meadow and go up from there.”

Hasiro took three more strides. Then he spoke, still without looking toward Sinowa. “The path is easy for most of its length, but always narrow, with many small cliffs and steep places that a pony cannot manage. In the places that are most narrow, two men can run abreast, but not three. Cliffs close in to either side. There are places along that path where a young
